Interesting name choice – we are not in the south; there are no dunes; and there were no eagles (only birdies!). Our journey today was taking us from Louisville to Chicago, and Indianapolis was the perfect place to get out and stretch our legs at the Eagle Dunes Par 3 course. This track is part of the Gary Player designed 27-hole Southern Dunes Golf Club.

Shot Value: There are a number of holes that will test the mid to high handicap golfer, and today Mother Nature created a new challenge at Hole #4 from the red tees. High native grasses will come into play for any wayward shots.

…and now the challenge for Mrs. Always Time for 9 from the red tees.

Design Variety: This is always a test for a par 3 course, but this one has a good variety of configurations. There are two sets of tees: Black ranging from 120 to 195 yards; and Red from 75 to 130 yards. There are hazards on the course which include water, trees, bunkers, and high rough.
Memorability: Holes #4 and #8 come to mind, but it has enough variety of holes to make it a good golfing experience.

Aesthetics: My playing partner said it is a very visually appealing course. There are hills and valleys, so even though it may be an easy walk for some, carts are included in the price.
Conditioning: The Fairways and greens were in excellent shape. The only drawback is you hit from mats. The mats are thick enough to accept small tees.
Ambience: This facility also includes the 18-hole championship course, restaurant, and 19th hole bar and grill. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Rating – Uncategorized: The Eagle Dunes course was not busy, so we were able to walk right on and finish our round in about 1 1/2 hours. A quick beer and bite at the grill completed our day and we resumed our journey to Chicago. If you are exploring options for a quick round in the Indianapolis area, Southern Dunes Golf Club is a good choice.
