We had to visit Brookview Golf and Lawn Bowling since I had never combined playing a 9-hole par 3 course with a lawn bowling match. The question was…do we start with golf or lawn bowling? Since this was part of the MN, SD, ND, +4: The Final Frontier – 50 in 75 Golf Adventure, golf was the first order of business. We also were able to walk right on the par 3 course and would have had to wait for a lawn bowling rink.
Shot Value: This is not your “run of the mill” par 3 course. Each hole will provide a variety of looks for your initial shot. This track will definitely test your accuracy from the tee boxes.
Design Variety: There are two sets of tees – Back (1287 yards) and Forward (1146 yards). From the back tees the holes range from 116 to 188 yards. Water, water, everywhere! Bring plenty of balls because you will find water hazards on most holes. There are also bunkers on four holes and plenty of trees to keep things interesting.
Memorability: Golf and Lawn Bowling – enough said!
Aesthetics: The setting in Golden Valley is terrific. The trees and ponds around the course make for an enjoyable round – as long as you stay out of those pesky ponds!
Conditioning: The course was in excellent condition. The fairways were green and lush, and the greens were outstanding.
Ambience: The pro staff were very helpful and truthful about the wet conditions we may find on the course after a heavy rain (it was fine). The setting and the restaurant completed the excellent experience.
Rating – Uncategorized: This facility was an unexpected enjoyable find. Not only was the par 3 an excellent choice, but there is also an 18-hole course, the Three One Six Bar & Grill, disk golf course in winter, and the lawn bowling links. Even though I only rated the par 3 as uncategorized, I would rate the entire facility as an Ace!
Final note: The Lawn Bowling rinks were full, so we were not able to try out our skills. However I did learn there is a difference between Bocce Ball and Lawn Bowling. In very general terms, the shape of the balls are different and the balls are tossed vs. rolled.
