Are you a Revolutionary War buff? You won’t have to endure the hardships Washington and his men encountered at Valley Forge but Meadow Brook does provide it’s own unique challenges.
It rained during my entire round but how can I complain when thinking about those brave patriots who spent a winter suffering (some without shoes and proper clothing) at Valley Forge? My rain soaked dri-fit hat goes off to each and every one of them for our country’s independence and allowing me the freedom to play this course today.
I felt as if I was executing marching drills conducted by Baron de Steuben while playing the first four holes. They are straight, back & forth, par 4’s with tree-lined fairways. These are the warmup (or scoring) holes and prepare you for battle. Holes six through eight are where the battle begins. All are par 5’s with a creek coming into play. If you birdie any of these holes, you have indeed conquered the enemy and the course. Victory is yours if you hit the green at the finishing 125 yard par 3.
Birdie: Walk in the footsteps of Generals Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold as you work your way around this par 37 layout. The history of the area and course are well worth the visit. If you don’t know the Prussian soldier, Baron de Steuben, research how he helped form our army into a lean, mean fighting machine. You can do this by visiting Valley Forge National Park (www.valleyforge.org) which is a short distance from the course. George Washington’s headquarters for that winter is pictured below.
Both MeadowBrook and Valley Forge make for an outstanding day.
2023 Update: I just discovered this course was closed shortly after I played it in 2014.
