Glenrock Golf Course would be the perfect track for me to play on equal terms with Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, or Jose Feliciano. If they were to join me in a game, this course would certainly “fit their eye”. The reason you ask? It’s because…
Of the nine holes, five of them have blind tee or approach shots.
Hole #1 starts with a big dogleg left and is the first blind shot. If you don’t drive it far enough you will continue to have no sight of the green. Plus the hill to the left can be very difficult to clear as you search for green #1. Just to be safe with your drive at Hole #3, don’t try to cut off too much of the rise on the left – there is OB over there. This is a fun hole with the green sitting on top of the hill. You just have to trust me that the green is up there. Your second shot is the second blind shot.
Hole #4 does not get any easier. You can see the green, but have to clear water and native vegetation to get there safely. Hole #5 is a rollercoaster ride. First you drive uphill (third blind shot), then you have another blind shot with your approach on this 411 yard (white tees) par 5. Keep the second shot to the right or you will find water or worse yet, the #6 tee box if you hit it left.
Hammer away and hope there is nobody out there on Hole #6. This is the fourth (or is it the fifth) blind shot. Make sure you hit the fairway because any drive to the right is certain death. If you ever get to the green, there is not a flat spot on it. Hole #7 has the last and easiest blind shot. If your shot is way right, you’re in deep trouble (remember hole #6). If you are just a little right, the hill will thrust your tee shot back into the middle of the fairway (as I inadvertently discovered).
Howdy, partner! You’re in Wyoming now where the wind blows all the time. This course sits on high ground, so make sure you use the wind to your advantage. Hole #8 is a par 3 of 185 yards and of course today it was right into the teeth of the wind. Should have used my driver! Hole #9 is the number one handicap hole. Out of bounds is very close to the left but with the wind blowing to the right, start your tee shot out over the OB and watch the wind place it in the middle of the fairway – perfect strategy.
Birdie: Glenrock Golf Course is a hidden gem along I-25 just south of Casper. It is a fun and challenging course. I was able to walk right on and play in one hour and 30 minutes. You are not going to find any 19th hole amenities but we are here to play golf, right? Sites around Glenrock include the Deer Creek Museum (a hub during the Pony Express days) and the Natural Bridge (one of only three natural bridges with water beneath). For everything else, ride on up to Casper.
