This is a real “Home on the Range” course. It starts a little strange as Holes #1 through #3 loop around the Country Club Villas and bring you back to the clubhouse. As usual in Wyoming, the #1 tee starts off into the wind.
Donkey Creek runs through the course and provides a challenging obstacle on a number of holes. Lonnie, the golf pro, shared with me that Gillette was originally called Donkey Town. Thank goodness for Edward Gillette who left his legacy on the area as a Burlington Railroad surveyor!
Holes #4 and #7 are par 5’s and yes, both play into the wind. Donkey Creek can come into play on both. The strength of this course are Holes #4 through the uphill par 4 finishing hole.
For a round during late March, the course was in excellent shape. I look forward to playing it again during the summer months. “Home on the Range?” Gillette Golf Club is “where the deer and the antelope play”. I guarantee that you will see an antelope or two hanging around during your round.
Birdie: With easy access off I-90, Gillette Golf Club would be a good destination for a quick “9” after traveling to or from Devils Tower National Monument. Look for this course to become an eighteen hole layout in the future and part of a total sports complex.
