Inch your Rock Crawler along Chain Break Trail at the Rock Crawling Park; Hear yourself breathe in the vastness of the landscape; Improve your aim at the local shooting range; Shop for supplies, eat a great meal and get a good night’s sleep in town; Play one of the best and affordable 9-hole courses at Cedar Ridges. According to the Rangely Area Chamber of Commerce magazine, these are among the Top 20 Things to do in Rangely. As riveting as all these sounded…I chose golf.
Cedar Ridges is located two miles east of town on Hwy 64 in Columbine Park. GPS won’t get you there, so just enter through the Columbine Archway and follow the signs. There is a little of everything on this course – rolling fairways with not many level lies, trees, bunkers and water. Most of the holes are straight but architect Frank Hummel uses obstacles to give the illusion of something more difficult. He did a great job in designing this course!
The first hole is the number one handicap and you can go low here if you avoid the water on both sides, the two bunkers and out of bounds to the right. Holes #2, #3, and #5 are part of the aforementioned straight holes in which trouble abounds. The par 3’s are both elevated. Number 4 is a 198 yard downhill shot, while #7 is a 136 yard uphill shot with water to the left and OB on the right. The finishing hole is a beauty and precise shots are needed for a strong finish.
Birdie: For a fun couple of days in Northwest Colorado, pair this outstanding course with a few additional activities from the Top 20 Things to do in Rangely. Hunt or photograph elk, deer, bear, mountain lion and bobcat; Hike and savor the scenery of Dinosaur National Monument’s canyon country; or Water ski, cliff dive, fish, swim and camp at Kenney Reservoir.
