A respite was greatly needed as I traveled Old Route 66 from Springfield, IL to Springfield, MO. My mind thinks I’m still 25, but this 70+ year old body tells me differently. It’s always a pleasure to meet other 9-hole enthusiasts along the way, and today I met up with Jeff from “munis and monsters” at Tower Tee Golf and Recreation in St. Louis. I was looking for a quick round with Jeff before I was swept off for another adventure.
The 9-hole par 3 short course was designed by Art Schaupeter, and each hole is inspired by famous par 3 holes from around the world. They include:
Hole #1 (Willow) – Prairie Dunes CC #2
Hole #2 (Short) – Old Course at St. Andrews #8
Hole #3 (Golden Bell) – Augusta National #12
Hole #4 (Redan) – North Berwick Golf Links #15
Hole #5 (Tower Tee) – Original Tower Tee #5
Hole #6 (The Dell) – Lahinch Golf Club #6
Hole #7 (Biarritz) – Biarritz Golf Club #3
Hole #8 (Postage Stamp) – Royal Troon Golf Club #8
Hole #9 (Eden) – Old Course at St. Andrews #11
Rating – Ace (51 out of 60): Tower Tee is an outstanding, fun spot for all ages including this tired old man. The par 3 is easy to walk and even though 7 of the 9 holes are less than 100 yards, the course can be a challenge for all golfers. This is a great location for kids learning the game, so if you are an experienced player, please be patient with the speed of play. A few additional amenities include: driving range; golf instruction; short game practice area; large putting green; footgolf; mini golf; batting cages; and bocce ball. Ah, nothing like a relaxing game of bocce ball to wind down after a grueling 9-hole round!
If you are seeking a good place to work on your iron game, or if you are driving cross country with a car full of kids and need a time-out, this is the place to visit.
