Hole #9 – Par 5, 521 yards. Long finishing hole with plenty of tree trouble down both sides.

Local weather report at the start of my round: 36 degrees, cloudy, and cold. I really drove 1,000 miles from Colorado to play Cedardell Golf Club today? I’m the first (and only) golfer on the course to start the day. Am I crazy? This course better be worth it. Flash forward 1hr and 30 minutes to the end of my round. Weather report: 39 degrees, cold, cloudy, and now it’s windy. Still the only golfer on the course but as I finish, a brave foursome of members is heading out. Here is what happened during the three degrees of warmup during my round. Read more →

Hole #1 – Par 4, 310 yards. Nice opening hole with not a soul around.

Washington entertained me to Lincoln. I left the snow and cold of Colorado and arrived at the wind and cold of Nebraska. College Heights Country Club (CHCC) is located on the campus of Doane University. I was welcomed at this semi-private course with opened arms. Correction – no welcome at all! Read more →

Hole #3 – Par 4, 271 yards. Watch out for those two big trees to the left!

Water’s Edge Golf Course – sounds like a winner, even though the water is the Detroit River. After a drive through downtown Detroit; a walk along the waterfront; and a stop at Hitsville, USA, we made our way to Grosse Ile (pronounced Growz Eel) to give this course the Always Time for 9 test.  Read more →

Hole #2 – Par 4, 315 yards. Risk/reward hole.

Here are some of the comments I read about this course: a challenging track; need to think your way around the rolling terrain; name says it all – scenic & located on a high knoll; huge, undulating greens on which you will often three putt; difficulties include elevation changes, ponds, canals, side hill lies; and a good mix of short and long holes. But you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, correct? Read more →

Hole #4 – Par 4, 253 yards. Beware – Water front & back!

I didn’t know what to expect. I had never played a First Tee golf course. Is it only for kids? If it is open to everyone, does it offer diverse lengths of holes? Is it challenging for the better golfer? After speaking with Brant, the head professional, and playing the course, this is what I learned about Red Hawk Golf & Learning Center and The First Tee – Quad Cities.  Read more →

Hole #9 – Par 3, 134 yards. “The Ant Hill”

We wanted to play golf on August 21, 2017 but thought the Solar Eclipse would interfere with our day. We decided to drive across the border into Canada so we wouldn’t be bothered by this event. Suddenly, when we reached the third hole, the earth around us darkened as the sun began to be eclipsed by the moon (those words sound vaguely familiar). So this event was not only occurring in the United States? Read more →
