Hole #1 – Par 4, 316 yards. Is your insurance up to date?

Please don’t slice; don’t hook; don’t hit a house; is insurance paid up? These were my swing thoughts the entire round as I tee’d it up at each hole on the Fairway Village Golf Course. The course is part of a 55+ community and I felt right at home as we met our playing partners. I’m creeping up on 70 but Harold was out there hitting it right down the middle at 89. I just want to be breathing at 89! Read more →

Robin Hood Course at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, ID

After driving six hours across “no-man’s” land in eastern Oregon, all we wanted to do was to get out and stretch our legs. A 9-hole golf course seemed like a great way to do this. A 9-hole executive course sounded even better to these brain-dead travelers. But a course called Robin Hood with tee boxes named Robin Hood and Maid Marion? Are the marshalls dressed up in tights with feathers in their caps? Well, we were just there to stretch our legs and get some blood circulating again. Robin Hood it is!  Read more →

Desert Peaks Golf Club – Madras, OR

So where is it? We couldn’t find it. In a town named Madras, there had to be a store called, “All Things Madras”. During my teenage years in the 1960’s, madras was “in”. I had madras shorts, shirts, and even a madras sport coat. No luck in town, so it’s off to Desert Peaks Golf Club. Maybe I can find a nice madras golf hat at the course.  Read more →

Highlands Golf Club. The entrance with the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

June 6 – D-Day and B-Day. Today is the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Even though my father was not on the beaches of Normandy (he was working on B-24’s in Italy), my thoughts were partially on him and the sacrifices of those brave men. Closer to home, today is Karen’s 60th birthday and my thoughts were also of her sacrifices she has made being married to me for 37 years. Her special gift (to deflect her mind from turning 60) was  Read more →

The history of The St. Martins Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club

We tee’d it up, where they tee’d it up; we walked the fairways, where they walked the fairways; and we stroked our putts, where they stroked their putts. That is where the similarity ended. The we (our host Powell, Ed, Andy and me); the they (Alec Ross and Alex Smith) were the winners of the 1907 and 1910 U.S. Opens. The Philadelphia Cricket Club consists of three courses: Wissahickon (18), Militia (18) and St. Martins (9). Before we start our round, let me take you on a history tour of the St. Martins CourseRead more →

College Hill Golf Course – Poughkeepsie, NY

College Hill Golf Course, Poughkeepsie, NY. My “caddie” unloading in background.

The parking lot was empty. This scene is becoming all too familiar. As Yogi would say, “it’s deja vu all over again”. We knocked on doors, peeked in windows, but nobody was home at College Hill Golf Course. It was late in the day (we arrived an hour before their scheduled closing time) but there was plenty of time to get in a quick 9. It’s decision time: play and pay later or come back tomorrow?
